Do you have what it takes to be a Skilled Craftsperson?
If you are interested in a career as a plumber, pipefitter or air conditioning/heating contractor, there are tremendous opportunities available to you at UA Local 74.
THE MYTH is that you become a skilled craftsperson if you can’t get into college or you choose not to work in a white collar world.
THE REALITY is that we accept the best qualified candidates who have a commitment to high quality work – and we only have openings for a portion of those who apply.
Apprenticeship is the heart and soul of our union
Apprenticeship is a structured system of training designed to prepare qualified individuals for jobs in skilled trades and crafts.
Labor and management jointly administer our apprenticeship programs; it is a time-tested model for giving young people valuable skills for a lifetime of earning.
Our program combines on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. By setting high standards, our apprenticeship program maintains quality and productivity.
We embrace emerging technologies and advanced teaching techniques.
Successful Apprentices
Apprentices that do well in our program are usually enthusiastic self starters who are eager to learn, and who are prepared to perform the physical work of the trade, often working alone, in remote areas and in less-than-ideal environments.
In order to be successful in our program, it helps to have a background in math, with some algebra.
An elective in mechanical drawing is also desirable. Prior experience in these courses are helpful, but not necessary for acceptance into the program.
EARN While You LEARN!
Apprentices earn college credits while they learn at our state-of-the-art training facility features the latest equipment including CADD systems and smart boards.
Why struggle to finance your education? We pay all of your tuition – plus you are paid for your on-the-job training. Our journey-level plumbers and pipefitters have completed one of the most comprehensive apprenticeship training programs available: five years of intensive classroom training taught by skilled journeymen. These certified instructors have a minimum of 200 hours of additional teaching and trade related training.
Beginning apprentices receive 40% of the Journeyman’s hourly rate with incremental pay increases of 5% as they progress through the ten six-month training periods of apprenticeship. Additionally, our apprentices receive health benefits after one month and earn pension credit, as well as annuity their second through fifth years.
